Traveller's Diarrhoea

 

What is Traveller's Diarrhoea?

Traveller's Diarrhoea is an illness caused by eating food or drinking water contaminated by germs (bacteria, viruses or parasites) . The symptoms of Trraveller's Diarrhoea are diarrhoea with severe fluid loss, vomiting, fever, aches, abdominal cramps and bloatedness of the abdomen.

Contaminated food and water may also cause other diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentry and Hepatitis A.

 

How do I prevent traveller's diarrhoea and other food and water borne diseases?

 

Do not eat undercooked meat and seafood, especially shellfish.

Eat only food that is properly cooked and which is still hot when served.

Drink only properly sealed bottled or canned water , or water that has been boiled. Use water purifying tablets if necessary. Do not drink water from the tap.

 

Do not take ice-cubes, ice cream , salads, cut fruit and unpasteurised milk.

Do not eat at street vendors or unhygienic restaurants.
